Former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s relatives left out of NRC

September 1: Relatives of India’s fifth president, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed have faiiled to establish that they are Indian citizens. The names of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s nephew- Ziauddin Ali Ahmed- and his family were left out of the final NRC which was declared on 31 August, 2019.

Their names did not feature in the draft NRC as well, which was published in July earlier this year. The 1951 NRC and all electoral rolls upto March 24, 1971, were digitised for the NRC updating exercise. Everyone who featured on those rolls was allotted a legacy code. Ziauddin claimed that he could not locate his legacy data in these digitised rolls.

The final NRC list of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published Saturday morning. Out of a total number of 3,30,27,661 applicants, the names of 3,11,21,004 were included in the final NRC. That means a total of 19,06,657 persons were excluded from the NRC. At least 2,500 NRC Seva Kendras (NSK) offices have been set up across the state for people to check the status of their applications between 10 am and 4 pm.The final updated NRC has also been made available in the official website: www.nrcassam.nic.in
