For best Public Health Facilities, Civil Hospital wins Kayakalp Award

February 16: It’s indeed a matter of pride for the residents of Barak Valley in general and Silchar in particular as  Civil Hospital, Silchar has been crowned with the prestigious Kayakalp Award, 2019. This was informed in a letter addressed to the Joint Director of Health Services by Dr. A.C. Baishya, Executive Director, National Health Mission, Assam.

 

In a meeting organised at the Conference Hall of Civil Hospital, MLA Dilip Kumar Paul expressed happiness at this achievement. In the list released by National Health Mission, Assam on 15 February, it was mentioned that Civil Hospital, Silchar became the winner of Kayakalp Award, 2019 by securing an external assessment score of 87.3. Kamrup Metro became second with an overall score of 86.

Last year, Civil Hospital achieved 4th rank and since then it was no looking back. A dedicated band of team toiled day and night to achieve this success. Doctors, nurses, staff worked relentlessly under the able guidance of the Superintendent Dr Ashutosh Barman, Dr Rajat Deb, Joint Director Dr S.J Das and many others to wear this crown.

Sources close to MLA Dilip Kumar Paul has informed that the Civil Hospital will get a cash award of Rs. 50 Lakh in this connection. In the meeting organised at Civil Hospital, Superintendent Dr Ashutosh Barman, Dr Rajat Deb, Joint Director Dr S.J Das, DPM Rahul Ghose were also present. On that day, the website of the hospital www.civilhospitalsilchar.org was also officially launched.

The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri J. P. Nadda launched “Kayakalp”-an initiative for awards to public health facilities in 2015. “Kayakalp” initiative will encourage every public health facility in the country to work towards standards of excellence to help the facilities stay clean and hygienic.

This does not apply only to physical cleanliness, but to develop and put in place systems and procedures for activities such as bio-waste disposal or protocols etc. The initiative towards total “Swacchta” in public health facilities is aimed towards building confidence of the users in public health facilities, provide quality service and encourage team work.

Five awards are given under this scheme: Best two district hospitals in each state (Best district hospital in small states), best two community health centres/sub district hospitals (limited to one in small states) and one primary health centre in every district. The awards are distributed based on the performance of the facility on these parameters- sanitation and hygiene, infection control, hospital upkeep, waste management, community participation assessment are done sequentially through a three tier system – internal assessment followed by peer assessment and then external assessment.
