Facebook posts label of “False Information” on Himanta’s “Pakistan Zindabad” post
Nov. 7: A huge controversy surfaced with allegations of “Pakistan Zindabad” slogan by some supporters of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) at Silchar Airport on Thursday while greeting party chief and MP Maulana Badruddin Ajmal. The incident came to light the following day after a Guwahati based news channel aired the video footage of the incident. Almost immediately, BJP heavyweight Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma posted the video in his Facebook Page on Friday at 11.42 AM.
In his Facebook Page, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video clip and along with it wrote, “Look at the brazenness of these fundamentalists anti-national people who are shouting PAKISTAN ZINDABAD while they welcome MP Ajmal. This thoroughly exposes Indian National Congress which is encouraging such forces by forging an alliance. We shall fight them tooth & nail. Jai Hind.”
The incident have triggered protests across Assam and multiple FIR’s were lodged including one by Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy. The AIUDF, has, however, denied the allegation and said that party supporters raised the slogan of Aziz Khan Jindabad” (AIUDF MLA of South Karimganj) and not “Pakistan Zindabad” as claimed.
However, the turn in the entire episode happened, when Facebook on Saturday affixed the label of “False Information” on the video post made by Himanta Biswa Sarma. The social media giant further wrote on the post, “Independent fact-checkers say that this information has no basis in fact.”
A link button “See Why” was also affixed by Facebook. On clicking this button, the following message was displayed, “We’re committed to fighting the spread of false information on Facebook. We use both technology and human review to remove fake accounts, promote information literacy and disrupt the financial incentives of spammers. In certain countries, we also work with independent fact-checkers who are certified through the non-partisan International Fact-Checking Network to help identify and review false information.”
On Friday evening, Alt News ( signatory partner of the International Fact-Checking Network), an Indian non-profit fact checking website had also reported the video posted by Himanta Biswa Sarma as “False”.
Meanwhile, acting on the FIR’s, Cachar Police has already started an investigation. Additional Police Super of Cachar, Jagadish Das told media that “Investigation is underway, we will take action.”
