September 19: Election to the Academic Council of Assam University, Silchar was concluded on 18 September for the post of Teachers’ Representatives from the affiliated colleges. Out of the 5 constituencies, election was held only for the Constituency No.1 which comprises of 4 colleges- Karimganj College, Karimganj, N.C. College, Badarpur, R.S. Girls’ College, Karimganj and Nilambazar College, Nilambazar. The candidates for rest of the 4 constituencies were elected uncontested. The tenure of their membership in the Academic Council will be for a period of 3 years.
In Constituency No.1, nomination was filed by Dr. Anup Kr. Dey from Karimganj College, Karimganj and Debajyoti Das Gupta from N.C.College, Badarpur. The election to the said constituency was held on 18 September and the counting of votes took place on 19 September, 2019. Inspite of being a numerical giant, the candidate from Karimganj College Dr. Anup Kr. Dey got only 27 votes, whereas, Debajyoti Das Gupta from N.C.College, Badarpur secured 74 votes. Mr. Debajyoti won by a margin of 47 votes. A total of 4 ballots were rejected and 6 voted for NOTA.
From Constituency No.2, Amalendu Chakraborty from S.S. College, Hailakandi was elected uncontested. In this constituency, there were 4 colleges- S.S. College, Hailakandi, Lala Rural College, MHCM College, Algapur, S.K.Roy College, Katlicherra and R.K.Nagar College, Ramkrishna Nagar.
Sudarshan Gupta from Radhamadhab College, Silchar was elected uncontested from Constituency No.3. There were 4 colleges in this constituency- G.C.College, Silchar, Radhamadhab College, Silchar, Women’s College, Silchar and S.R.College, Kalain.
From Constituency No.4, Md. Afsor Hussain Laskar from MCD College, Sonai was elected uncontested. In this constituency, there were 2 colleges- MCD College, Sonai and Janata College, Kabuganj. There were two more colleges in this constituency, namely, Cachar College, Silchar and Nehru College, Pailapool. However, both these two colleges did not send the electoral roll to the election cell of Assam University and hence were unable to participate in the election procedure.
Dr. Sankar Neogi from Haflong Govt. College was elected uncontested from Constituency No.5. Election to Constituency No.6,7 & 8 was not held as the colleges under these constituencies either did not submit the electoral roll or abstained from contesting.
