Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated with religious fervour at Silchar
June 5: Eid-ul-Fitr is one of Islam’s most important festivals, celebrated on the first day of Shawwal to mark the end of the month of Ramazan. Lakhs of Muslims thronged mosques and eidgahs across the country on Wednesday to offer prayers and exchanged greetings on Eid-ul-Fitr. Large congregations were witnessed at several prominent mosques, including the historic Jama Masjid, in the national capital as people gathered to offer ‘namaz’.
At Silchar, the largest congregation was at the Itkhola Eidgah, the biggest of this town. The namaz was conducted by Silchar’s Bara Masjid Imam, Sabbir Ahmed, which was attended by close to 20,000 people belonging to Islam. During his sermon, the Imam said, “Marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramzan, this festival strengthens our belief in charity, fraternity and compassion. On this day, let us re-dedicate ourselves to these eternal values that characterise our civilization.”
A small gathering was also organised by the district administration wherein leaders of various organizations in this mosque were invited after the namaz came to an end. Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Dr. Sourindra Kumar Bhattacharjee, Taimur Raja Choudhury, Imad Uddin Bulbul, Sanjib Roy and many other prominent personalities of the town were present during the occasion.
In order to avert any untoward incident, heavy security measures were undertaken by the district administration. Anti-sabotage team was present in and around the Itkhola Eidgah. Speaking during the occasion, the leading citizens of the town expressed the view that this joyous festival would provide an opportunity to reaffirm our faith in the country’s cultural heritage, unity, spirit of friendship and fraternity among all sections of society.
