Dr. Deven Dutta killed: 24 hours withdrawal of non-essential health services at SMCH from Tuesday

September 1: The Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) of Sllchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) along with the Silchar Medical College Students’ Union (SMCSU) and the Post graduate Trainee Association (PGTA) deeply condemned the barbaric killing of senior doctor Deben Dutta at Teok Tea Estate in Jorhat on 31 August, 2019.

In a press release issued by the Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) of SMCH, it was stated that, “The entire medical fraternity is shaken by this gruesome act and hence we unanimously support the 24 hours closure of Non-essential Medical Services from 6 AM on 3 September, 2019 to 6 AM on 4 September, 2019 as called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). We request all the students and doctors of SMCH to join the movement and abstain from providing any Non-essential services like OPDs, surgeries etc. including all academic activities.”

In this connection, the Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) of SMCH along with the Silchar Medical College Students’ Union (SMCSU) and the Post graduate Trainee Association (PGTA) will also organize a sit in protest demonstration from 10 AM to 12 Noon in front of the Out Patients Department of SMCH on 3 September, 2019.

Expressing his views, Dr. Daipayan Deb, Secretary of JDA, SMCH said, “All the emergency services shall, however, function as usual. We demand strict action & immediate arrest of the culprits as per law and increase in security measures in all the government health institutes of Assam.”

As per reports, on Saturday evening, locals of Teok Tea Estate in Jorhat, Assam brutally attacked the hospital inside the garden and the 73-year-old resident doctor Deven Dutta. As per reports, 33-year-old Sukra Majhi, a casual worker, who resided at No 12 line was taken to the hospital inside the estate, in critical condition at around12 noon on Saturday. At that time Dr. Dutta was not present in the hospital and the pharmacist was also on leave. So the nurse injected a saline after which the patient died.

Following the death of the patient the angry tea garden labourers alleged that there was no hospital staff to attend to the deceased. Sources revealed that when Dr Dutta arrived at about 3.30 pm, he was severely beaten up and locked in a room in the hospital. At about 5 pm police from Teok police station and CRPF rescued the doctor and rushed him to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries.
