Doctor beaten to death in Jorhat’s Teok Tea Estate, lock out declared, IMA protests

১ সেপ্টেম্বর : শ্রমিকরা একজন সিনিয়র ডাক্তারকে মেরে হত্যা করার পর এমালগেমেটেড প্লান্টেশনস প্রাইভেট লিমিটেডের টিয়ক চা বাগানটি রবিবার লক আউট ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে। প্রসঙ্গত, ৩১ আগস্ট এক মর্মান্তিক ঘটনায় চা-বাগানের চিকিৎসক ৭৫ বছর বয়সী ডাঃ দেবেন দত্তকে উন্মুক্ত শ্রমিকরা মারধর করে হত্যা করে। শ্রমিকরা অভিযোগ করে, চিকিৎসক ডিউটিতে না থাকার জন্যই একজন রোগীর মৃত্যু হয়েছে।

বাগান কর্তৃপক্ষ লক আউট বিজ্ঞপ্তি জারি করে বলেছে, এই বর্বরোচিত ঘটনার পর বাগানের ম্যানেজার তথা অন্যরা জীবন ও সম্পত্তির প্রতি নিরাপত্তাহীনতায় ভুগছেন। বাগানের স্বাভাবিক পরিস্থিতি ঘুরে না আসা পর্যন্ত এবং শ্রমিকরা অনুশাসন, সদাচার ইত্যাদি প্রতিশ্রুতি না দেওয়া পর্যন্ত এই লক-আউট জারি থাকবে।

অন্যদিকে এই নির্মম হত্যাকাণ্ডের জন্য অভিযুক্ত ২১ জন শ্রমিককে রবিবার টিয়ক পুলিশ জিজ্ঞাসাবাদের জন্য আটক করেছে। এদিকে রাজ্য পুলিশের ইন্সপেক্টর জেনারেল দীপক কেডিয়া রবিবার যোরহাটে উপস্থিত হয়ে বাগানটি পরিদর্শন করেন। তিনি যোরহাট থানায় পুলিশের উচ্চপদস্থ আধিকারিকদের সঙ্গে এক বৈঠকে মিলিত হন। তিনি এ ঘটনায় জড়িতদের খুব শীঘ্রই গ্রেফতার করতে পুলিশকে নির্দেশ দিয়েছেন।

September 1: On Saturday evening, locals of Teok Tea Estate in Jorhat, Assam brutally attacked the hospital inside the garden and the 73-year-old resident doctor Deven Dutta. As per reports, 33-year-old Sukra Majhi, a casual worker, who resided at No 12 line was taken to the hospital inside the estate, in critical condition at around12 noon on Saturday. At that time Dr. Dutta was not present in the hospital and the pharmacist was also on leave. So the nurse injected a saline after which the patient died.

Following the death of the patient the angry tea garden labourers alleged that there was no hospital staff to attend to the deceased. Sources revealed that when Dr Dutta arrived at about 3.30 pm, he was severely beaten up and locked in a room in the hospital. At about 5 pm police from Teok police station and CRPF rescued the doctor and rushed him to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries.

Jorhat police have detained 21 people in connection to the tragic incident and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered in regard to the incident. Following the incident, the management of the tea estate had ordered a lock-out until further notice. Further, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Assam State Branch has also called for a statewide withdrawal of medical facilities including emergency, in all tea estate hospitals in the state from 6 AM on September 2 to 6 AM on September 3.

Teok Tea Estate is located under Teok Revenue circle and falls under Teok police station, about 22 kms away from Jorhat town.
