Demand for fees relaxation, AIDSO burns effigy of Education Minister

July 1: In a recent circular issued by the Director of Higher Education (DHE), Assam, it was stated that those students who has back/arrear paper(s) in the preceding semesters will not be provided free admission in the next even/odd semester. The student will then have to seek admission after paying the full fees. This circular was vehemently opposed by AIDSO since the last few days.

On Monday, supporters of AIDSO gathered near Women’s College, Silchar and burnt the effigy of the Education Minister. Siddhartha Bhattacherjee. Speaking to way2barak, leaders of AIDSO said, “A large number of poor students will be deprived of further education due to this anti-student circular issued by the Assam government. Further, the same circular of DHE also specified that those students who does not have 75 percent class attendance shall also be debarred from seeking free admission in the subsequent semester.

AIDSO also appealed to other organisations to oppose the controversial circular which would deprive students of further education. They also said, “Though the present government claims to be welfare oriented, yet in reality they were depriving the poor students from seeking higher education.”
