DC Hailakandi appreciates SHGs for making sanitary napkins on Menstrual Hygiene Day
May 29: Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is celebrated all throughout on 28 May. Along with the rest of the country, the day was also observed in the district of Hailakandi. On that day, Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi along with DPM ASRLM Viplab Nath visited Netaji Village Organisation at Rangauti Part II where for the first time in the district SHGs are making pads as a means of livelihood with help of ASRLM.
The theme of this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is #timetotakeaction . Keerthi Jalli congratulated President Morjina Begum Choudhury and Secretary Samara Khanum Barbhuiya and team for this brave step towards dignity. Speaking during the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner lauded the efforts of the SHGs who are making the sanitary pads.
Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is a global advocacy platform that brings together the voices and actions of non-profits, government agencies, individuals, the private sector and the media to promote good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for all women and girls. More specifically, MH Day:
- breaks the silence, raises awareness and changes negative social norms around MHM, and
- engages decision-makers to increase the political priority and catalyse action for MHM, at global, national and local levels.
In a social media post, Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi wrote, “It is seen that access to sanitary pads helps increase school attendance of girl children by 11 percent and nullifies chances of infection through cloth rags. I would request all to show patronage to Netaji Village Organisation as the sanitary pads they are making is wholly home-made and cost effective.”
