DC Cachar holds meeting with civil society, discusses issue of banning plastic
July 16: In compliance with the latest notification issued by Assam Government regarding the banning of all sorts of plastics in the state, a meeting with the members of civil society, merchant association,market committee and individual owners of business establishments was convened by Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Laya Madduri on Tuesday.
In the meeting, it was unanimously decided that the plastics which are harmful to environment and health of the people will no longer be used and instead they ought to resort to alternative materials which are eco-friendly. Owners of various marriage halls located at Silchar town also agreed to use steel utensils during reception instead of single-use plastics.
It is pertinent to mention here that, according to the latest notification issued by Department of Forest and Environment , Government of Assam, usage of any sorts of plastic is a punishable offence .If any person is convicted under this Act, he or she will have to go for imprisonment for a term of not less than 5 years or Rupees 1 lakh will be fined or both. Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri urged upon all the businessmen and common people to comply with the Act.
C.Srinivasan ,an expert on Solid and liquid Resource management system spoke in details on the issue of waste management. He explained to all as to how to avoid plastics during rituals. With the help of power point, Mr. Srinivasan showed slides and explained how garbage can be converted into ‘gold.’ The meeting was also attended by Niharendra Narayan Tagore, Chairman of Silchar Municipality Board, ADC Bikram Dev Sharma, Assistant Commissioner Abhilash Barnwal and Extra-Assistant Commissioner Navanita Hazarika among others.
