February 7: The increasing drug menace at various parts of Silchar has becoming a growing problem. Moreover, incidents of death related to intake of drugs at Silchar Goldighi Mall has become a major cause of concern. This was alleged by the members of Congress Sevadal Young Brigade. On Thursday, the Young Brigade submitted a memorandum to Silchar Municipality Board (SMB) Chairperson Niharend Narayan Thakur wherein they urged upon him to take immediate positive measures to stop such drug menace or else they would launch a democratic movement after a fortnight.

In the said memorandum, Congress Sevadal Young Brigade has alleged that the Goldighi Municipal Mall at Silchar has become a safe haven for drug consumption. They also stated that there has been a tremendous rise in such incidents. They categorically mentioned that inspite of recovering 3 dead bodies from the Mall in the recent past, no positive preventive measures were taken by the SMB, which is the guardian of the Mall. They raised concern over the poor management and security system of the Mall.

Moreover, the members of Congress Sevadal Young Brigade also raised the issue of absence of street lights in various parts of the town which they said encouraged anti-social activities. They urged upon the SMB to work in unison with the police administration in tackling such anti-social activities prevalent in the town. They further urged upon the Chairman of SMB to take in hand awareness programmes in schools and colleges about drug abuse. They told the Chairman to initiate positive steps in this regard without any further delay.
