Another state slips out of BJP's control

December 23: With the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) alliance winning a comfortable majority of 47 seats in a House of 81, Hemant Soren of JMM is all set to take over as Chief Minister of Jharkhand, returning to the job he held for a year before BJP won in 2015. The oath ceremony will take place on Thursday.

Total Seats: 81 ::: Magic Figure: 41

  • BJP           : 25 seats
  • Congress  : 16 seats
  • JMM          : 30 seats
  • RJD           : 01 seats
  • JVM           : 03 seats
  • AJSU         : 02 seats
  • Others       : 04 seats
“Today a new chapter will begin for this state. I want to assure everyone that their hopes will not be broken irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and profession,” Hemant Soren later said at a press conference that was interrupted by a salvo of firecrackers set off by supporters.
The victory of the JMM-Congress alliance in Jharkhand has come as a moral booster for opposition unity and for the grand old party seeking to become relevant again in Indian politics after suffering two successive defeats in general elections. While Congress is in power in the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Puducherry on its own, it has come to power in Maharashtra and Jharkhand jointly with the support of its allies Shiv Sena and NCP and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Soren, who was his alliance’s chief ministerial face, contested from two seats – Dumka and Barhet – and won both. Chief Ministerial candidate and JMM executive president Hemant Soren on Monday met his parents in Ranchi and took their blessings. Hemant, wearing jeans and a coat, took a cycle ride to reach his father’s residence.
