Biswajit Daimary to be nominated for Rajya Sabha again by BPF
March 1: Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) president and Bodoland Territorial Council(BTC) chief Hagrama Mohillary disclosed in Kokrajhar on Sunday that the party will field Biswajit Daimary for the Rajya Sabha again. BPF is an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state of Assam.
The term of office of 55 members of the Rajya Sabha elected from 17 States is due to expire on their retirement in April, 2020. It is in this backdrop that the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday, announced elections of 55 members of Rajya Sabha from 17 states. The election for these 55 seats will take place on 26 March, 2020. The counting of votes will also take place on the same day.
Out of seven Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, three will fall vacant on April 9. Bhubaneswar Kalita, Dr. Sanjay Singh and Biswajit Daimary from Assam will retire on April. As such, elections for the 3 Rajya Sabha seats from Assam to be held on 26 March. Notification for election to these 55 seats of Rajya Sabha would be issued on 6 March.
Apart from Assam, the other 16 states which will go for the Rajya Sabha polls on 26 March are West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan and Meghalaya.
