‘Bhupen da deserves the honour, don’t politicise it,’ says his sister Sudakshina Sarma
February 12: Sudakshina Sarma, younger sister of music maestro Dr. Bhupen Hazarika said “Bhupen da deserves the honour. If alive, he would have been elated on being conferred with the country’s highest civilian award. It makes me sad that so much politics revolve around the issue today. The family should accept the award. ” Times8 quoted Sudakshina Sarma giving her opinion on the issue of conferring of Bharat Ratna on Dr. Bhupen Hazarika posthumously.
The brother of Bhupen Hazarika and prominent singer Samar Hazarika told the media persons that the family has neither rejected the award nor criticised the Centre for conferring the Bharat Ratna posthumously. Manisha Hazarika, wife of Bhupen’s late brother and popular singer Jayanta Hazarika also expressed happiness for conferring on him the highest civilian award.

The government had on January 25th, 2019 announced thatBharat Ratna would be conferred upon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika posthumously, along with former President Pranab Mukherjee and the late social activist Nanaji Deshmukh.
However, on Tuesday, Tez Hazarika, son of Bhupen hazarika took to social media and stated that “Bharat Ratnas and longest bridges while necessary, will not promote the peace and prosperity of the citizens of India. Only just popular laws and foresight on the part of leadership will. Numerous media journalists are now asking me whether or not I will accept the Bharat Ratna for my father. I go on record here to anwer that A), I have not received any invitation so far there is nothing to reject, and how the Center moves on this matter far outweighs in importance the awarding and receiving of such national recognition — a display of short lived cheap thrills,” he added.
Meanwhile, Assam Congress MP Ripun Bora has given zero hour notice in Rajya Sabha to discuss ‘circumstances which led to late Bhupen Hazarika’s son refusing to accept his father’s Bharat Ratna’.
