ভাইকে ফোটা দিয়ে উৎসব পালন বোনদের
‘Bhai Phota’: A festival that marks bonding between brother & sister

ওয়েটুবরাক, ২৬ অক্টোবরঃ :”ভাইয়ের কপালে দিলাম ফোটা
যম দুয়ারে পড়ল কাটা
যমুনা দেয় যমকে ফোটা
আমি দিলাম আমার ভাইকে ফোটা।”

ছড়ার এই চার পংক্তি আজ লক্ষ কণ্ঠে উচ্চারিত হবে। ভাইয়ের মঙ্গল কামনায় কপালে চন্দনের তিলক পরিয়ে বোনেরা নিজের মনেই এই ইচ্ছে প্রকাশ করবেন। আর এভাবেই বাঙালির ঘরে ঘরে মূর্ত রূপ পাবে ভ্রাতৃদ্বিতীয়া।

কার্তিক মাসের শুক্লা দ্বিতীয়া তিথিতে এই উৎসব হয়। কিছু কিছু পরিবারে প্রতিপদে ফোটা নেওয়ার রেওয়াজও রয়েছে। কথিত আছে, কার্তিক মাসের শুক্লপক্ষের দ্বিতীয়ায় মৃত্যুর দেবতা যম তাঁর বোন যমুনার হাতে ফোটা নিয়েছিলেন। অন্য এক কাহিনি অনুসারে, নরকাসুর বধের পর কৃষ্ণ তাঁর বোন সুভদ্রার কাছ থেকে ফোটা নিয়েছিলেন। সেই থেকে এই রীতি চলছে বলে অনেকে বিশ্বাস করেন।

ভাইফোটা বিভিন্ন পরিবারের রীতিনীতিভেদে পরিবর্তিত হয়ে থাকে। সাধারণ রীতি রেওয়াজ অনুযায়ী বোনেরা ভাইয়ের মাথায় ধান ও এবং দুর্বাঘাসের শীষ রেখে ভাইয়ের মঙ্গল কামনা করেন। এই সময় শঙ্খ ও উলুধ্বনির মাধ্যমে এক মাঙ্গলিক পরিবেশের সৃষ্টি হয়। এরপর বোন ভাইকে মিষ্টিমুখ করায় এবং একে অন্যকে উপহার দেওয়ারও রীতি রয়েছে। বাঙালির ঘরে ঘরে ভাইফোঁটা একটি ঘরোয়া অনুষ্ঠান হলেও ব্যাপক উৎসাহ উদ্দীপনার মধ্যে দিয়ে পালিত হয়।

পশ্চিম ভারতে ভাইবিজ একটি বর্ণময় অনুষ্ঠান। সেখানে এ উপলক্ষে পারিবারিক সম্মেলনেরও আয়োজন করা হয়। মহারাষ্ট্রে মেয়েদের ভাইবিজ পালন অবশ্য কর্তব্য। এমনকি, যেসব মেয়েদের ভাই নেই, তাঁদেরও চন্দ্র দেবতাকে ভাই মনে করে ভাইবিজ পালন করতে হয়। এই রাজ্যে বাসুন্দি পুরী বা শ্রীখণ্ড পুরী নামে একটি বিশেষ খাবার ভাইবিজ অনুষ্ঠানের জন্য তৈরি করার রেওয়াজ আছে।

নেপাল ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গের দার্জিলিং পার্বত্য অঞ্চলে এই উৎসব ভাইটিকা নামে পরিচিত। সেখানে বিজয়াদশমীর পর এটিই সবচেয়ে বড় উৎসব। এ দিকে ভাইফোঁটা উপলক্ষে অন্যদিনের চেয়ে বাজার একটু চড়া। মাছ, সবজি, মিষ্টি সবকিছুই কিনতে গিয়ে একটু হলেও পকেটে টান পড়েছে। তা সত্ত্বেও ভাইফোঁটা কিন্তু কোনওভাবেই জৌলুস হারায়নি।

way2barak, Oct.26: When it comes to celebration, Bengalis are perhaps on the top of the list. Every occasion has got a legacy, rituals and meaning of its own. One such Festival is ‘Bhai Phota.’ On this occasion, sisters offer prayers for their brother’s long life and the brothers promise to protect their sisters.

This festival is celebrated two days after another Important Hindu festival, the Diwali. Bhai Phota falls in Shukla Paksha of Kartik Month of Bengali Calendar. Bhai Phota is known as Bhai Dooj in rest of India. Literally Bhai means brother and Phota means ‘a mark’ in Bengali Language. The name of the festival has its origin in the rituals of this festival. On this occasion, sisters put a Tilak on the forehead of their brothers.

Bhai Fota has got many legends associated with it. One legend is about Lord Krishna. Subhadra, the sister of Lord Krishna welcomed her brother with a lamp and put a tilak on his forehead when Lord Krishna came back after killing Narakasur. Another legend is associated with Rig Veda. Surya had twin children named Yama and Yamuna. Yama was invited by Yamuna at her house. When Yama, the God of Death, came to meet Yamuna, she prayed for prosperity, success and well being of her brother.

On the day of Bhai Phota, sisters make sandalwood paste and arrange for ‘Durba’ or tender grass shoots and paddy grains. Brothers are made to sit on ‘asanas’ or floor mats and tilak of sandalwood paste, curd and honey is put on their forehead by the sisters. A lamp is lit and when sisters put tilak on the forehead of their brothers. The sisters chant a mantra or hymn meant for this occasion:

‘Bhaier Kopale Dilaam Phota (I put tilak on my brother’s forehead)
Jomer duaare porlo kaanta (Thorns fall at the entrance of Yamas house)
Jamun dey Jomke phota (Yamuna puts tilak on Yamas forehead)
Ami di amar bhai ke phota (Like Yamuna I put tilak on my brothers forehead)’

On this occasion traditional Bengali Breakfast and Lunch are prepared. Typical breakfast is Luchi and Aloo Dum. For lunch different types of fish like Rohu, Hilsa, Prawn, Pabda, Chital etc are made. Special dishes of mutton and chicken are also prepared on this occasion. Sisters also offer Misti Doi or sweet curd to their brothers. Sister also makes Payash or kheer for their brothers. Brothers and sisters give gifts to each other after all rituals are over.
