Aswash & Navya to hold event on issues of transgender at Goldighi Mall on 22 August
August 21: From being mocked and treated differently, to facing unfair rejection at workplaces, to being subjected to violence and murder, India’s transgender community have had a harrowing time for ages.Traditionally, India’s trans community has looked to street and sex work for their livelihood, due to which they are subjected to mockery and violence. Shaming them for their choices of work and preaching from a privileged point of view, whatever may be the intention, does not help. What is required is compassion and awareness in the society.
It is in this context that Aswash NGO, whose motto is “Against Human Trafficking” in association with Navya will be organising a sensitisation programme entitled. “Astitva…Ek Pehchan” (Existence…An Identity) on 22 August, 2019 at Goldighi Mall, Silchar from 6 PM onwards. Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Speaking to way2barak, Arundhati Gupta, General Secretary of Aswash said, “None seemed to be bothered especially in this valley about the issue of the transgender community. Transgender people have existed in every culture, race, and class since the story of human life has been recorded, yet they are perhaps the most misunderstood community. The need of the hour is to sensitize the society at large as regards the transgenders so that they too could look towards them with compassion. We therefore request one and all to be there in our event centering transgenders at Goldighi Mall on Thursday. ”
