February 17: The four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case were all sentenced to death by Patiala House Court on Monday, 17February. Mukesh Singh, 32, Pawan Gupta, 25, Vinay Sharma, 26, and Akshay Kumar Singh, 31, will be executed together at Tihar jail at 6 am on 3 March, 2020. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana pursuant to pleas by Tihar Jail and the victim’s parents, seeking issuance of a fresh date to hang them.
The hanging of the four convicts was supposed to take place on February 1, 2020, however, this has been deferred. This is the third time that the death warrant has been issued to the convicts since the previous dates were deferred due to the convicts seeking legal remedies available to them.
On 16 December, 2012, Nirbhaya (fearless) and her friend had boarded the bus from south Delhi after a movie. The 23-year-old died days after she was raped on a moving bus, tortured with an iron rod and dumped on the road, naked and bleeding. Besides these four, two more men were arrested by the police. Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide in jail and a juvenile was released from a reformation home after serving a three-year term.
