Accident at Meherpur, 2 dead, truck burnt by angry mob

৩০ অক্টোবরঃ মেহেরপুর ট্রেঞ্চিং গ্রাউন্ডের সামনে এক সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায় দুইজনের মৃত্যু হয়েছে। আশঙ্কাজনক অবস্থায় আরও ২ জন। উত্তেজিত জনতা খুনি ট্রাকটিকে জ্বালিয়ে দেয়।

অভিযোগ, ট্রাকটি প্রথম আউলিয়াটিলা এলাকায় দুর্ঘটনা ঘটায়। কয়েকটি বাইক একে ধরার জন্য পিছু নেয়। ট্রাকচালক তখন গতিবেগ বাড়িয়ে দেয়। পথে স্থানে স্থানে আরও ধাক্কার উপক্রম হয়। শেষে ট্রেঞ্চিং গ্রাউন্ডে ঢুকে আত্মগোপনের চেষ্টা করছিল। কিন্তু তখন দুর্গাপল্লী ঠাকুরবাড়ি সর্বজনীন কালীপূজা কমিটি বিসর্জনের শোভাযাত্রা নিয়ে বেরোয়।

প্রতিমার গাড়ি, জেনারেটর গাড়ি পেরিয়ে যায়। ট্রেঞ্চিং গ্রাউন্ডের সামনের রাস্তাটি পেরোচ্ছিল  সাউন্ড সিস্টেমবাহী একটি গাড়ি ও তার পেছনে নৃত্যরত একদল গ্রামবাসী। ট্রাকটি তাদের দিকে খেয়াল করেনি। সোজা ভেতরে ঢোকাতে গিয়ে শোভাযাত্রায় অংশগ্রহণকারীদের পিষে ফেলে। জখমদের দ্রুত শিলচর মেডিক্যাল কলেজে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়। ডাক্তাররা জানিয়েছেন, দুই মহিলা মারা গিয়েছেন। তারা হলেন পম্পা দে (২০ বছর, বাবা মানিকলাল দে) এবং  সোনালি দাস (১৮ বছর, বাবা কাঞ্চন দাস)। দুজনেরই বাড়ি দুর্গাপল্লীতে। বাকিদের মধ্যে বেশ কয়েকজনকে আইসিইউতে ঢোকানো হয়। ২৫ বছরের মৌসুমী দে (টিঙ্কু দের স্ত্রী) ও ১২ বছরের প্রীতম দেবের (বাবা দীপককুমার দেব) অবস্থা আশঙ্কাজনক বলে হাসপাতাল সূত্রে জানা গিয়েছে।

মোট ১৯ জন এই সময়ে হাসপাতালে চিকিতসাধীন। তাঁরা হলেনঃ সুকৃতী ভট্টাচার্য (১৫ বছর, পিতা রবীন্দ্র ভট্টাচার্য), স্বপ্না বৈষ্ণব (১৭ বছর, পিতা রাজীব বৈষ্ণব), পায়েল দাস (১৪ বছর, পিতা কাশী দাস), রাধিকা রবিদাস (১১ বছর, পিতা দিলীপ রবিদাস), বাপি দাস (৩৬ বছর, স্বামী দীপঙ্কর দাস), সন্দীপ গোয়ালা (৩৫ বছর, পিতা সুরজলাল গোয়ালা), টুম্পা দেব (২০ বছর, পিতা নির্মল দেব), নিকিতা দেব (৩৫ বছর, স্বামী দীপক দেব), শোভা বাসফর (১৭ বছর, পিতা গোপাল বাসফর), ইতি বৈষ্ণব (৩০ বছর, স্বামী রাজু বৈষ্ণব), মল্লিকা দে (২৩ বছর, স্বামী শঙ্কু দে), নমিতা দে (৫৭ বছর, স্বামী মানিকলাল দে), দীপশঙ্কর দেব (১৩ বছর, পিতা দীপক দেব), স্নেহলতা দাস (৬৫ বছর), রাহুল আলম চৌধুরী (২৭ বছর, পিতা মুজিবুর রহমান), কাঞ্চন দাস এবং জয়দীপ দে (বয়স ৪০ বছর, পিতা জি দে)।

ক্ষিপ্ত জনতা পোস্তবোঝাই ট্রাকটিতে আগুন ধরিয়ে দেন। রাস্তার উপরেই সেটি ভষ্মীভূত হয়ে যায়। রাত সাড়ে সাতটার এই ঘটনার পর  শোভাযাত্রায় অংশগ্রহণকারী এবং বীরবল বাজার সংলগ্ন মানুষ রাস্তা অবরোধ করে রেখেছেন। সে সময় রাঙ্গিরখাড়ি পুলিশের একটি দল বাইক নিয়ে সেখানে গেলে জনতার তাড়া খেয়ে বাইক ফেলে পালায়। পরে সেই বাইকটিও জ্বালিয়ে দেওয়া হয়। এই সময়ে অবশ্য বিশাল পুলিশ বাহিনী ঘটনাস্থলে ছুটে গিয়েছে। ট্রাকচালক আত্মসমর্পণ করেছে। জনতা ঘুংঘুর থানার সামনে জড়ো হয়ে তাকে তাদের হাতে ছেড়ে দেওয়ার দাবি জানিয়ে চলেছেন। অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার জগদীশ দাস নিজে উপস্থিত থেকে পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণের চেষ্টা করছেন।

October 30: Two persons died near the trenching ground in Meherpur. The condition of two more were reported to be quite serious.

It was alleged that the truck first caused an accident at Auliyatilla near Nagatilla. It was then that some bike riders followed the truck. Sensing this, the truck driver increased the speed. It was then that the truck did more accidents at some other points. The truck then went inside the trenching ground to be aloof from the eyes of the public. But just then, a procession came out from Meherpur Durgapally with idol of Kali for immersion.

The vehicle carrying the idol and the generator just passed over there. The vehicle loaded with sound system was then passing followed by people dancing to the tunes of music. The killer truck without taking note of those dancing ran over them. The injured were at once rushed by the local people to Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). Doctors informed that two female were brought dead. As per sources, the deceased are Sonali Das (18), Daughter of Kanchan Das and Pompa Dey (20), Daughter of Manik Lal Dey of Meherpur. Mousumi Dey (25), wife of Tinku Dey and Pritom Deb (12) are struggling with death at ICU.

A  total of 19 persons injured due to the ‘killer’ truck are at present admitted at SMCH. The injured are: Sukriti Bhattacharjee (15, D/O. Rabindra Bhattacharjee, Sapna Baishnab (17, D/O Rajib Baishnab), Payal Das (14, D/O Kashi Das), Radhika Rabidas (11, D/O Dilip Rabi Das), Bappi Das (36, W/O Dipankar Das), Sandeep Goala (35, S/O. Suraj Lal Goala), Tumpa Deb (20, D/O. Nirmal Deb), Mousumi Dey (25, W/O. Tinku Dey), Nikita Deb (35, W/O. Dipak Kr. Deb), Shova Basfor (17, D/O. Gopal Basfor), Pritam Deb (12, S/O. Dipak Kr.Deb), Iti Baishnab (30, W/O. Raju Baishnab), Mallika Dey (23, W/O Shanku Dey), Nomita Dey (57, W/O. Maniklal Dey), Deep Shankar Deb (13, S/O. Dipak Kr.Deb), Rahul Alom Choudhury (27, S/O. Agitated public, set the truck on fire which was loaded with poppy seeds. The truck was burnt into ashes on the road. Agitated mob blocked the road near Birbal Bazar at Meherpur. A huge police force led by Additional Police Commissioner Jagadish Das rushed to the spot. The truck driver has surrendered before the police.

A huge crowd gathered near Meherpur Police out Post and demanded that the ‘killer’ driver be handed over to them. Police sources have state that the situation is now under control. Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque rushed to SMCH. He was accompanied by Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy.
