Enumeration of elephants started afresh at Cachar

১৬ নভেম্বরঃ কাছাড় জেলায় হাতির ডাটাবেস নতুন করে তৈরি করছে বনবিভাগ। সে জন্য সমস্ত মাহুতদের হাতি নিয়ে হাজির হতে বলা হয়েছে। প্রথমদিনে ১১টি হাতি গিয়েছে মনিয়ারখাল এলাকার পূর্বনির্ধারিত জায়গায়। বন-কর্তারা সবকটি হাতির স্বাস্থ্য পরীক্ষা করেন। মাহুতদের কাছ থেকে প্রতিটি হাতি সম্পর্কে নানা তথ্য সংগ্রহ করেন। হাতির স্বাস্থ্য কেমন আছে, খাদ্যের অভাব হচ্ছে কিনা, কোথায় কী ধরনের কাজে লাগানো হচ্ছে, সবই নথিভুক্ত করা হয়। পরে তাদের দেহে মাইক্রোচিপস লাগানো হয়।

কাছাড়ের ডিএফও সান্নিদেও চৌধুরী জানান, ২০০৭ সালে সর্বশেষ চিপস লাগানো হয়েছিল। সেই সূত্রেই ৩৪টি হাতির রেকর্ড রয়েছে জেলা বন দফতরে। পরবর্তী সময়ে একটি হাতিকে অন্য জেলায় নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়। বাকি ৩৩টি হাতির কয়টি মারা গিয়েছে বা কত হাতির জন্ম হয়েছে, তা আর নথিভুক্ত হয়নি। তাই এই হাতিশুমারি জরুরি হয়ে পড়ে। তাঁর কথায়, কোনও হাতিকে দিয়ে অবৈধ কাজ করানো হচ্ছে কিনা, তাও জানার চেষ্টা করছেন তাঁরা।

একদিকে, করিমগঞ্জ জেলার পাথারকান্দির সীমান্ত লাগোয়া গ্রামগুলিতে যে সব হাতি উপদ্রব চালায়, সেগুলি ভারতের নাকি বাংলাদেশের, কেউ জানে না। অন্যদিকে, খাদ্যের অভাবে হাতির পাল অসমের বিভিন্ন গ্রামে হানা দিচ্ছে, এই সময়ে কাছাড় বনবিভাগ এই বিশেষ কর্মসূচি হাতে নিয়েছে। সান্নিদেও জানান, সমস্ত হাতির নথিভুক্তি শেষ হলে তাদের নিয়ে বিভিন্ন ধরনের কাজের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে বিভাগের।

November 16: The Forest Department has involved itself in the preparation of a new database of elephants. For this reasons, all the mahout’s have been asked to come along with their elephants. On the first day, 11 elephants went to the prefixed spot at Moynarkhal. The Forest officials did the health check-up of all the elephants. They also took various information regarding the elephants from the mahouts. The queries made were: health condition of the elephant, whether they are facing scarcity of food, in what works were the elephants used etc. All information was then documented by the officials. After that, microchips were fitted in their body.

Sannidheo Choudhury, District Forest Officer (DFO), Cachar informed that in 2007, elephants were fitted with microchips. As such, record of 34 elephants is there with the Forest Department. Out of that 34, 1 elephant was taken to another district. Out of the rest 33 elephants, there is no specific record as to how many of them died or how many new elephants were born. This has necessitated fresh enumeration of the elephants. He further said that they are also checking whether the elephants are used for doing any illegal work.

Again, none knows whether the elephants which causes ravage in Patharkandi area of Karimganj district belongs to India or Bangladesh. When on one hand, scarcity of food is driving the elephants to attack various villages of Assam, the Forest Department at Cachar is carrying on the special task of enumeration. Mr. Sannideo informed that once the entire process of enumeration is over, his department will chalk out future plans as regards the elephants.
