National Mathematics Day celebrated by AAM Cachar District Branch at G.C. College

December 23: The 132nd birthday of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was celebrated in a befitting manner by the Cachar District Branch of Assam Academy of Mathematics in collaboration with Department of Mathematics, Gurucharan College, Silchar on 22 December, 2019 at Conference Hall of Gurucharan College.

The day long celebration comprised of an inaugural session, invited talk and a mathematical quiz competition followed by prize distribution. Dr. Kedar Nath Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, NIT Silchar graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and presented an invited talk on ‘Beautiful Mathematics”. Two renowned teachers of Mathematics Durgesh Ranjan Dey Purkayastha, Retired Assistant Headmaster, Cachar High School and Sitesh Ranjan Deb, Retired Headmaster, Shyamacharan Dev Vidyapeeth were felicitated for their relentless contribution in Mathematics education at school level.

A mathematical quiz competition “Mathwiz” was organized for students of classes VIII to X. A total of 51 teams from various schools in and around Silchar participated in the screening round of the quiz. Five teams made it to the final round. Two best teams were awarded with a trophy and mathematics olympiad books. The first prize went to Diptarup Das and Sanjiban Paul of Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Silchar and the second prize went to Nirjhar Nath and Aditya Deb Roy of Holy Cross School, Kabuganj.

Earlier on the day, the inaugural session began with the dignitaries paying floral tributes to Srinivasa Ramanujan. Dr. Debasbish Sharma, General Secretary of AAM Cachar District briefed the audience about the significance of mathematics for students and announced that a three months certificate course on “Initiation into Mathematics Olympiads” will begin in February 2020 as a joint initiative of the Department of Mathematics, Gurucharan College Silchar and AAM Cachar District Branch. Students interested in mathematics olympiads can enroll themselves in this course from 13 January 2020 onwards.

Dr. Bibhas Deb, Principal, Grucharan College and Dr. Biplab Chaudhuri, President, AAM Cachar District also spoke about the importance of National Mathematics Day and urged the students to take up mathematics as a career.
