Section 144 imposed in Karimganj; strikes, bandh & rallies prohibited

December 9: In an order issued by Ambamathun M.P., District Magistrate, Karimganj, it was notified that some groups of persons / organisations / associations are planning to carry out disruptive activities in parts of Karimganj district which may cause breach of peace and public tranquility and may cause disturbance / interrupt peaceful movement of public, traffic and damage to public life and property.

It is in this backdrop that in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 144 of Cr.P.C., the District Magistrate of Karimganj has issued prohibitory order in the entire district, which shall come into effect from 9 December, 2019. As per the order, no individuals are allowed to call for strikes, bandh or rallies, issue inflammatory communal statements etc. No mashal/torch bearing processions by any organisation or individual is allowed. Also, movement of 5 or more persons in any public place, road or thoroughfares in Karimganj district was declared illegal.

Further, the order also prohibited any individual or group to carry any weapon, which can be used as an weapon of offence. To carry or use any crackers which are capable of producing sound or any chemical effect was also barred. As per the order, no public meeting, use of mike etc without permission from district administration is allowed.

However, cinema halls and other places of entertainment, educational institutions, bus depots, railway stations, religious places and marriage halls and other places of daily public gatherings have been kept out of the ambit of the order prohibiting the assemblage of five or more persons. The order passed by the District Magistrate, Karimganj shall remain in force for two months from the date of order (that is, 2 months from 09.12.2019), if not ordered otherwise in the meantime.
