Soaring price of onion: CM Sonowal directs to purchase onion from NAFED & sell them at controlled price
September 22: The skyrocketing prices of onion in the state has infact brought tears in the eyes of the common people. The issue has become so grave that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumers department for immediate positive intervention.
In a special order, the Chief Minister has directed the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumers department to purchase onion from National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and provide the same at controlled prices in the market. It needs mention here that the state’s monthly onion requirement of around 60,000 metric tonne.
The chief minister also directed the department to device a mechanism to generate self-employment opportunities for the rural youth through setting up of cold storages and warehouses which could be run on Public-Private Partnership mode.
Recently, the prices of onion and other essential kitchen commodities has thrown the Sonowal government in the face of sharp criticism from the opposition parties as well.
