End of an Era: Atal Bihari Vajpayee passes away at 93

প্রকৃতই ইন্দ্রপতন। জীবনাবসান হল প্রাক্তন প্রধানমন্ত্রী, বিজেপি নেতা অটলবিহারী বাজপেয়ীর। বৃহস্পতিবার সন্ধ্যা ৫টা ৫ মিনিটে তাঁর হৃদযন্ত্র স্তব্ধ হয়ে যায়। কিছুদিন ধরেই দিল্লির এইমস-এ চিকিতসাধীন ছিলেন। ৩৬ ঘণ্টা ধরে তাঁর স্বাস্থ্যের চরম অবনতি ঘটে। লাইফ সাপোর্ট সিস্টেমও শেষপর্যন্ত কাজে আসেনি। আগামীকাল সন্ধ্যা সাড়ে ৫টায় তাঁর শেষকৃত্য সম্পন্ন হবে।

কেন্দ্র প্রাক্তন প্রধানমন্ত্রীর মৃত্যুতে সাতদিনের রাষ্ট্রীয় শোক ঘোষণা করেছে। আগামীকাল শুক্রবার অসমেও সমস্ত সরকারি-বেসরকারি শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে ছুটি। বন্ধ থাকবে কেন্দ্রীয় সরকারের সমস্ত কার্যালয়। আগামী ১৮-১৯ আগস্ট বিজেপির জাতীয় কার্যনির্বাহী কমিটির দিন স্থির হয়েছিল। বাজপেয়ীর মৃত্যুতে সেই সভা স্থগিত রাখা হয়েছে। দেশের বিভিন্ন প্রান্ত থেকে রাজনৈতিক মতাদর্শের বাছবিচার না করে তাঁর আত্মার চিরশান্তি করা হচ্ছে।

উপরাষ্ট্রপতি এম ভেঙ্কাইয়া নাইডু বাজপেয়ীকে বড় রকমের সংস্কারক বলে অভিহিত করেন। যোগাযোগের ক্ষেত্রে তিনি প্রায় বিপ্লব ঘটিয়ে দেন তখন। স্বাধীনোত্তর ভারতে তিনি ছিলেন একজন প্রকৃত অর্থেই দুর্নীতিমুক্ত রাজনীতিক। ট্যুইট করে প্রাক্তন রাষ্ট্রপতি প্রণব মুখোপাধ্যায় বলেন, তিনি বিরোধী থাকার সময়ে যুক্তি দিয়ে সরকারের সমালোচনা করতেন, আবার প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণে সকলের মতামত নিতেন। একেবারে মনের ভিতর থেকে তিনি ছিলেন গণতন্ত্রপ্রিয়। তাঁর মৃত্যুতে দেশ হারাল এক মহান সন্তানকে। সেইসঙ্গে একটা যুগের অবসান হল।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদি বলেন, বাজপেয়ী ছিলেন রাষ্ট্রের জন্য সমর্পিত প্রাণ। কংগ্রেস সভাপতি রাহুল গান্ধীও তাঁর মৃত্যুতে শোক প্রকাশ করেছেন।

Former Prime Minister and veteran BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee died on Thursday at 5.05 PM at the age of 93 in New Delhi’s AIIMS. Vajpayee’s mortal remains will be taken to his Krishna Menon Marg home shortly. In a press release issued by AIIMS, it was stated that “Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated ovk=er the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems. Despite the best of efforts, we lost him today.” His last rites will be performed at Rajghat at 5.30 PM on Friday.

The Union Cabinet is like to meet at 6.30 pm tonight to pass a resolution about national mourning in wake of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s death. BJP has postponed its two-day national executive which was slated for August 18-19, in the wake of the demise of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Condolence messages started to pour in cutting across party lines.

Speaking to reporters, Venkaiah Naidu hailed Atal Bihari Vajpayee as “a big reformer”. “He brought connectivity revolution in the country. For five years, he provided a stable government. He was a true Indian. It was his remarkable humility to take everyone along with him. He was an honest leader of the country post-independence. It’s a big loss,” he said. “The nation pays homage to the great son of this country.”

In a tweet, former president Pranab Mukherjee said, “A reasoned critique in Opposition and a seeker of consensus as prime minister, Atal ji was a democrat to the core. In his passing away, India has lost a great son and an era has come to an end. My deepest condolences.”

In a series of tweets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. “His passing away marks the end of an era. He lived for the nation and served it assiduously for decades. My thoughts are with his family, BJP karyakartas and millions of admirers in this hour of sadness,” Modi said.

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted after the demise of former prime minister Ram Nath Kovind. “Extremely sad to hear of the passing of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, our former prime minister and a true Indian statesman. His leadership, foresight, maturity and eloquence put him in a league of his own,” he said.

“Today India lost a great son. Former prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, was loved and respected by millions. My condolences to his family and all his admirers,” Congress president Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.
