২৮ এপ্রিল : করিমগঞ্জ শহরের বুকে প্রেস ব্যাটেরিয়ান চার্চের প্রাঙ্গণে থাকা ক্রুশে জুতোর মালা পরানোর ঘটনায় জেলাজুড়ে চাঞ্চল্য দেখা দিয়েছে। একটি দুষ্টচক্র সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতি বিনষ্ট করার প্রয়াস চালালেও গির্জা কর্তৃপক্ষ শান্তভাবে যথাযথ পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করায় কোনও ধরনের অপ্রীতিকর ঘটনার সৃষ্টি হয়নি। ঘটনার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে অবশ্য পুলিশ তৎপর হয়ে পরিস্থিতি সামাল দিয়েছে।

রবিবার হঠাত করেই দেখা যায়, শহরের চার্চ রোডে গির্জাঘর প্রাঙ্গণে দুষ্টচক্র ক্রুশে জুতোর মালা পরিয়ে দিয়েছে। বিষয়টি নজরে আসার পরই চার্চ কর্তৃপক্ষ পুলিশে খবর দেন। পুলিশ এসে জুতোর মালাটি সরিয়ে নিয়ে গেছে। তবে কেঊ এ ঘটনায় এ পর্যন্ত গ্রেফতার হয়নি। ঘটনার খবর পেয়ে সেখানে দৌড়ে আসেন বিধায়ক কমলাক্ষ দে পুরকায়স্থ। কোনও অবস্থায় যাতে শান্তি-সম্প্রীতি বিঘ্ন না ঘটে সেজন্য তিনি ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করেছেন।

জেলা বিজেপি সভাপতি সুব্রত ভট্টাচার্য এ নিয়ে টেলিফোনে পুলিশ সুপারের সঙ্গে আলাপ করেছেন। তিনি বলেন, একটি দুষ্টচক্র ভোটের পর শহরের শান্তি নষ্ট করতে চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। একের পর ঘটনার পুনরাবৃত্তি করে উত্তেজনা সৃষ্টি করার প্রয়াস করছে। তবে করিমগঞ্জের মানুষ শক্তভাবে এসব রুখে দিয়েছেন। বিধায়ক কমলাক্ষ শহরের মানুষকে এ ধরনের ঘটনায় শান্তি বজায় রাখার অনুরোধ জানান।

April 28: Indian society has continued to face social disharmony, particularly resulted by the communal unrest. In one such incident, miscreants attempted to create communal disharmony by putting a garland of shoes on the Holy Cross of the Christians in Presbyterian Church at Thana Road, Karimganj. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon.

The nefarious incident in a century old Church has evoked resentment among the people of Karimganj. On Sunday afternoon, Nimai Dey, an employee of the Presbyterian Church suddenly noticed that shoes weaved in the form of a garland was put around the Holy Cross inside the church compound. He at once raised a hue and cry. Information was given to Karimganj Police. The incident spread far and near like wild fire.

Police forces reached the spot at once and removed the garland from the cross. It was assumed by the police that some miscreants have tried to create unrest in the region to fulfil their vested interest. On being informed, MLA Kamalakkhya Dey Purkayastha rushed to the spot and asked the police to do proper investigation so that the miscreants can be nabbed.Security has been tightened in and around the church.

Subrata Bhattacharjee, President of District BJP had a talk with the Police Super of Karimganj over telephone. He alleged that some people or group with vested interest were trying to disrupt the prevailing atmosphere of peace by such unholy acts. MLA Kamalakkhya Dey Purkayastha has also appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquility.
