কুকুরের মাংস বিক্রির অভিযোগে মারপিটের ঘটনায় প্রিয়া মজুমদার নামে এক যুবতীকে গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছে। অন্য অভিযুক্তদেরও খুঁজছে পুলিশ। আজ প্রিয়াকে আদালতে তোলা হলে বিচারকের নির্দেশে জেলে পাঠানো হয়েছে।

ঘটনা ২৪ নভেম্বরের।  গ্রেসি মার ও লালমুনপুই নামে দুই উপজাতি মহিলা শিলচর শহরে সবজি বিক্রি করেন। গত ২৪ নভেম্বর তাদের দোকানের পাশে একটি কুকুর বেঁধে রাখা ছিল। ৮-১০জন যুবক-যুবতী মাংস বিক্রির জন্য কুকুর বেঁধে রাখার অভিযোগে তাদের মারধর করে। কিল-ঘুষি, চুল ধরে টানাটানির সঙ্গে পেটে লাথিও মারে। তাতে অন্তঃসত্ত্বা গ্রেসির অবস্থা আশঙ্কাজনক হয়ে ওঠে। তাকে শিলচর মেডিক্যাল কলেজ হাসপাতালে গর্ভপাত করাতে হয়।

প্রতিবাদে বরাক উপত্যকার সমস্ত উপজাতি ছাত্র সংগঠন জোট বাঁধে। শিলচরে জেলাশাসকের কার্যালয়ের সামনে বিক্ষোভ দেখায়। বিজেপি প্রভাবিত নর্থইস্ট লিঙ্গুইস্টিক অ্যান্ড এথনিক কো-অর্ডিনেশন কমিটি (নেলেক)-ও অভিযুক্তদের গ্রেফতারের জন্য চাপ সৃষ্টি করে।

পুলিশ সোশ্যাল মিডিয়ায় ছড়িয়ে পড়া ভিডিও দেখে প্রিয়া মজুমদার, দুর্বা পাল ও সাগ্নিক গুপ্তকে শনাক্ত করে। তা জেনে তিনজনই আগাম জামিনের আবেদন জানায়। আদালত সে আবেদন খারিজ করে দেয়। এর পরেই কাল রাতে তারাপুরের কালীমোহন রোডের এক বাড়ি থেকে প্রিয়া মজুমদারকে গ্রেফতার করা হয়। আজ আদালতের নির্দেশে জেলে পাঠিয়ে দেওয়া হয়। পুলিশের দাবি, বাকিদেরও শীঘ্র গ্রেফতার করা হবে।

December 22: A girl was arrested on Friday night for being allegedly involved in beating a Hmar lady. Two Hmar ladies were accused of selling dog’s meat by some youth and later on they were beaten. However, the other accused are still on the run and police are trying to nab them at the earliest.

On 24 November, two ladies were physically assaulted allegedly by by some youth at a roadside market in Jail Road Silchar (opposite Oriental School). The incident started on the issue of selling ‘dog’s meat.’ A Hmar lady had tied a dog in front of the vegetables which she was selling. Two girls first had a alteration of words with Hmar vendors Gracy Hmar and Lalmonpui. They alleged that they were planning to sell the meat of dog. Later on, they also physically assaulted them. Gracy was hospitalised at Silchar Medical College & Hospital in a serious condition. There the doctors informed that the lady was pregnant and that she had a miscarriage.

The incident was vehemently criticised by different organisations. Last Wednesday, a protest demonstration was held near the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar. They alleged that inspite of lodging a complaint with the police, no arrests have been made so far. A number of organisations like Barak Valley Hmar Students’ Union, Dimasa Students Union, Manipur Youth’s Front Assam, All Assam Manipuri Students Association and some others led the demonstration with placard in their hands. They demanded the arrest of the culprits within 24 hours.

It was also alleged that those youth after physically assaulting the ladies uploaded the video in the social media. On watching the video, police identified three persons to be involved in this incident. The three accused are Priya Majumdar, Durba Paul and Sagnik Gupta. All three of them applied for anticipatory bail. However, the court rejected their petition. It is then that Cachar Police arrested Priya Majumdar on Friday night from a house at Tarapur, Silchar. Police is confident of arresting the other two who are absconding at present.
