664 militants of 8 extremist groups lay down arms in Guwahati

January 23: In a significant development, 664 militants belonging to eight insurgent groups of Assam laid down their arms in Guwahati on Thursday. Those that surrendered include cadres from United Liberation Front of Assam Independent (ULFA(I)), National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Saoraigwra (NDFB-S), Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), Rabha National Liberation Front (RNLF), Adivasi Dragon Fighter (ADF), National Liberation Front of Bengali (NLFB), CPI (Maoist) and National Santhal Liberation Army (NSLA).

All of them surrendered their arms at an event held at the Gauhati Medical College (GMC) Auditorium in the presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and top cops of the city. “The surrender of arms by the militants is the results of the efforts made by the Special Branch of Assam Police, led by IGP Hiren Chandra Nath,” said Assam DGP said Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta.

It was learnt that many of the militants who surrendered on Thursday infact came back to normal life at different times more than one year back. The surrender of arms by them was just an official ceremony.
