73% voter turnout in Mizoram & 74.6 % in Madhya Pradesh till 5 PM

November 28: Elections to the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly took place on Wednesday. Polling took place in 1,164 polling stations in eight districts across Mizoram. Mizoram recorded a 73% voter turnout. A total of 209 candidates are in the fray. There are 7,70,395 voters including 3,94,897 women. Chief Minister Lal Thanhawala is seeking a third consecutive term. In each of the constituencies, there is a pink polling booth, locally called ‘Dingdi’ after a wild flower found in the state. The Dingdi polling booths are run only by women polling officials. It has been learnt that people belonging to the BRU community have turned up on large numbers to vote in the Mizoram polls.

In Madhya Pradesh also polling was over onWednesday for the 230 constituencies spread across the state. Madhya Pradesh recorded a 74.6% voter turn out. The BJP has been in power in Madhya Pradesh since the last 15 years. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh minister and senior BJP leader Devraj Singh Parihar was caught carrying approximately Rs. 10 lakh in his car which the Congress alleges were meant for ‘cash for vote.’ As many as 2,899 candidates including 1,094 independents are in the fray for the 230 seats. The counting of votes for these two states in scheduled on 11 December along with three other states.
