Amidst boycott, Mizoram Governor addresses empty ground on R-Day

January 26: A statewide Republic Day boycott call in Mizoram was given by an umbrella organisation of NGO Coordination Committee, an organisation of civil society groups and student bodies against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Amidst the boycott call, Kummanam Rajasekharan, Governor of Mizoram addressed a virtually empty ground at the state capital on the 70th Republic Day.

As per reports, only ministers, legislators and top officials were present as the general public refrained from attending the ground where the official celebration of Republic Day was going on in Aizawl. In other district headquarters, the deputy commissioners unfurled the Tricolour in the absence of senior officials and public, as was the case in sub-divisional and block headquarters. Inspite of the boycott, the Republic Day celebrations passed off peacefully in the state without any untoward incident, despite the presence of placards carrying protesters near the venues.
