February 20: In a significant development, Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) authority has suggested the release of close to 2,500 officials who are engaged with the registration process and to replace them with a new set of officials. It needs mention here that the overhauling comes at a time when the entire exercise of NRC remains suspended. As per reports, these LRCR officials have not been able to avail transfer and posting since they were engaged in NRC work.
In a letter written to the Deputy Commissioners of all the districts of Assam on Tuesday, NRC State Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma stated, “As per the decision taken in the NRC Coordination Committee meeting held on 30/01/2020, you may release LRCRs/ALRCRs on posting of their relievers and the new officer will take over the charge of the LRCR/ALRCR.”
The NRC State Coordinator further stated that if the relieving officers do not have experience in NRC work, then he or she may be “suitably trained” by the additional deputy commissioner in-charge of NRC or the district project supervisor.
There are 2,500 NRC Seva Kendras (NSK) and each has one Local Registrar of Citizens Registration (LRCR), who has to be a gazetted officer. The final NRC was declared o 31 August, 2019 as per which more than 19 lakh people were excluded. The reasons of exclusion were still now not informed by the NRC authorities.
