₹ 18.23 crore sanctioned for repairing embankments at Betukandy & Tarapur Shivbari
December 2: The two embankments at Betukandy and Tarapur Shivbari were lying in a dilapidated condition since the past few years. The local residents of these areas made several representations but of no avail. The condition of the embankments were so serious that a major catastrophe seemed to be on the cards. Finally, due to the persuasion of Silchar MP, Dr. Rajdeep Roy, an amount of ₹ 18.23 crore was sanctioned for repairing both the embankments.
Just after becoming Member of Parliament, Dr. Rajdeep Roy along with Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri and ADC Rajib Roy along with the concerned departmental officials went on a visit of the two END embankments at Betukandy and Tarapur Shivbari. There they listened to the various grievances of the local people in this regard. The departmental officials informed the MP that plan estimate and DPR for these two projects were already sent to Guwahati long ago, but since then there was no progress.
Collecting copies of the plan estimate and DPR, Rajdeep Roy approached the departmental minister Keshab Mahanta and Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. He apprised them that if these two embankments are not repaired on a war footing, then during the monsoons, water from river Barak will enter Silchar and submerge a greater part of the town and its outskirts. He also mentioned that as a result of this, Silchar-Kalain road will get submerged for good.
In the month of September, 2019, minister Keshab Mahanta along with his departmental officials discussed this issue with utmost seriousness in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner in the presence of the MP and MLA’s including cabinet minister Parimal Suklabaidya. At the direction of Keshab Mahanta, top priority was accorded to get these two embankments repaired at the earliest.
It is in this connection that ₹ 7 crore 77 lakh was sanctioned for the repairing of Tarapur Sivbari embankment, whereas, an amount of ₹ 10 crore 46 lakh was earmarked for the Betukandy embankment. The work order for the work of these two embankments will be issued very soon. MP. Rajdeep Roy said that the work of repairing the two embankments will get completed within the stipulated time and so Silchar will get relieved from flood water rushing in. Dr. Roy said, “I personally take this opportunity to thank the Departmental Minister Keshab Mahanta and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for sanctioning the requisite fund for this purpose on a priority basis.”
