Polling at Silchar: Ongoing events at a glance

April 16:Polling for 2nd phase of Parliamentary Election is on the way on 18 April, 2019. Here are some of the major events of the poll at a glance:

• Voting has started for the Phase II of Lok Sabha Election 2019 in 1461 and 1721 polling stations respectively for the Silchar and Karimganj Parliamentary Constituencies.
• A total of 1191289 (613931 Male, 577283 Female & 75 third gender) electorates will be exhibiting their right to franchise for the prestigious Silchar seat, whereas 1338005 (696638 Male, 641349 Female & 18 third gender) voters will vote for the Karimganj seat.

• A Presiding Officer of Polling Station No. 146, Sector 9, LA 9-Silchar fell down from a table early in the morning, where he slept in the night. The injured Presiding Officer was rushed to Silchar Medical College & Hospital.

• Another Presiding Officer Dr. Debashish Chakraborty, an Assistant Professor of Assam University who was assigned duty at Saraswati Vidya Nikentan, 2nd Link Road, Silchar suffered mild stroke at around 8 AM and fell unconscious during poll. He was immediately rushed to Silchar Medical College & Hospital.

• Voting at Abdul Kalam Azad LP School at Panchayat Road, Silchar could not be started due to non-functioning of EVM. Large number of people were reported to be waiting for casting vote at that centre. It was learnt that the Presiding Officer of that centre has asked for help from the Sector Officer. Voting in that centre started at 8.10 AM after the machine was set ok.

• In a polling station at Dholai Sector 40, Control Unit was found to display error before the start of Mock Poll as the machine exhibited the date of poll as 16-04-2019 instead of 18-04-2019. As such, the Sector Officer had to replace the Control Unit.

• A fear-psychosis has gripped the voters of Assam wherein National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being updated. Citizens are scared by the rumour that if any voter does not cast his/her vote during the ongoing parliamentary election than his/her name would get deleted from the NRC. A number of differently-able voters were seen to accompany their kith and kin in the polling stations.  One such incident was reported from Nityamayi Vidyalaya, Tarapur, Silchar. A 52-year old female voter Bijoya Paul, a patient of paralysis was seen to come to this polling centre along with two companions with great difficulty.

• The forerunners of the prestigious Silchar parliamentary constituency seat Sushmita Dev of Indian National Congress (INC) and Dr. Rajdeep Roy of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came out in the morning to cast their votes. While BJP candidate Dr. Rajdeep Roy cast his vote at Radhamadhab Balika Vidyalay, Sushmita Dev of Congress cast her vote at Nityamoyi Vidyalaya, Tarapur.

• According to the official poll percentage released by the office of the chief electoral officer (CEO) till 9 am Nagaon recorded a poll percentage of 9.62 per cent, Mangaldoi recorded 11.32 per cent, Silchar recorded 13.29 per cent, Karimganj recorded 11.82 per cent while the Autonomous Districts (SC) constituency recorded a poll percentage of 12 per cent.

• At polling station No. 71 (B) under Katigorah Assembly constituency, voting started at around 7.50 in the morning due to malfunctioning of EVM. There are a total of 1033 voters in this particular centre.
• In the Rangpur No 1 polling station, voting started late due to EVM glitches. Polling was delayed in polling station Number 200 in Silchar owing to a malfunctioning of VVPAT machine. However, the machine was fixed later on and subsequently voting resumed.

• Reports has also come in about malfunctioning of VVPAT machine at 144 Bidrohipar LP School under Sonai Assembly segment at around 8.30 in the morning. The Sector Officer was informed by the Presiding Officer and he is supposed to have replaced the VVPAT.

• NPP candidate for Silchar Constituency Nazia Yasmin Mazumdar casts her vote at Silchar.

• As per data received from Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, till 12.30, a total of 14 Control Units (CU), 17 Ballot Units (BU) & 35 VVPATs had to be replaced at various polling stations of Silchar parliamentary constituency for malfunctioning.

• Till 1 PM, overall polling percentage in 5 constituencies of Assam is 54 percent. At 1 PM 56 percent votes were cast at Silchar, 58 percent at Karimganj, 61 percent at Diphu, 46 percent at Nagaon and 49 percent at Mangoldoi.
• At 2PM overall polling percentage in 5 constituencies of Assam is 59 percent. At 2 PM 61 percent votes were cast at Silchar, 58 percent at Karimganj, 61 percent at Diphu, 56 percent at Nagaon and 59 percent at Mangoldoi.

• At 3 PM, overall polling percentage in 5 constituencies of Assam is 67 percent. At 2 PM 67 percent votes were cast at Silchar, 68 percent at Karimganj, 64 percent at Diphu, 67 percent at Nagaon and 69 percent at Mangoldoi.
• EVM went wrong at PS No-57 of Udharbond LAC in the afternoon. New set of Control Unit, Ballot Unit and VVPAT has been given replacing the EVM set.
• Tension mounted at Lakhisahar LP School, Hailakandi. Clash between supporters of BJP & AIUDF. Police reached the school. Voting was held up for some time. 70 percent votes polled at the centre
• Silchar: 73.08 percent
• Karimganj (SC): 72.09 percent
• Autonomous District (Diphu): 69.51 percent
• Mangaldoi: 75.07 percent
• Nowgong: 75.71 percent
