জ্যোতিষীর ভুল! প্রসবের পর মার খেলেন আশাকর্মী, বিক্ষোভ

১৬ নভেম্বর : জ্যোতিষ হাত দেখে সবকিছু বিচার করে বলেছিলেন, মহিলার ছেলে হবে। কিন্তু জ্যোতিষীর অনুমান যখন ঠিক হল না, তখন মহিলার আত্মীয়রা সরাসরি অভিযোগ আনলেন আশা কর্মীর বিরুদ্ধে। গর্ভবতী অবস্থায় ওই মহিলাকে সহায়তা করেছেন যে আশা কর্মী, তিনিই নাকি বদলে দিয়েছেন সন্তান। মোবাইল ও ইন্টারনেটের জমানায় মানুষ যখন চরম আধুনিক, তখনই এই কুসংস্কারাচ্ছন্ন ঘটনাটি ঘটেছে শহর শিলচরেই। এখানেই শেষ নয়, বিচারসভায় বসে যখন কিছু সমাজ সচেতন মানুষ জ্যোতিষের অনুমানকে কুসংস্কার বলে উড়িয়ে দিলেন, তখনও আবার মার খেতে হল অসহায় ওই আশা কর্মীকে।

শুক্রবার রোগীর পরিবারের এই অত্যাচারের বিরুদ্ধে মাঠে নেমে একজোট আশা কর্মীরা জানিয়ে দিলেন, ১২ ঘণ্টার মধ্যে দোষীদের শাস্তি না হলে তারা কাজ বন্ধ করে দেবেন। শিলচর সিভিল হাসপাতালে বিক্ষোভ প্রদর্শন করে আশা কর্মীরা এ দিন বড় ধরনের আন্দোলনের হুমকিও দিয়েছেন।

ঘটনা প্রায় দেড় মাসের আগের। ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর শিলচর মেডিক্যাল কলেজে এক শিশুকন্যার জন্ম দেন কালীবাড়িচরের বাসিন্দা জয়শ্রী চৌধুরী। কিন্তু এই মহিলার ছেলে সন্তান হবে বলে ভবিষ্যদ্বাণী করেছিলেন এক জ্যোতিষী। পরিবারের লোকজনই আগাম জেনে নিতে আগ্রহ দেখিয়ে জয়শ্রীকে জ্যোতিষীর কাছে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন। কুসংস্কারাচ্ছন্ন আত্মীয়দের মনে বদ্ধমূল ধারণা হয়ে গিয়েছিল যে, জয়শ্রী ছেলে সন্তানেরই জন্ম দেবেন। কিন্তু মেয়ের জন্ম হতেই তারা বিষয়টি মেনে নিতে পারছিলেন না। তারা ভেবে নেন, জ্যোতিষীর কথা মিথ্যা হতে পারে না। বরং এর পেছনে আশা কর্মীর চক্রান্ত রয়েছে। সেই থেকেই তারা কালীবাড়িচর এলাকার আশা কর্মী শেফালি দাসকে নানাভাবে দোষারূপ করে যাচ্ছিলেন। মহিলার আত্মীয়রা সরাসরি আশা কর্মীর বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ এনে বলেন, তিনিই নাকি চুপিসারে ছেলে সন্তান বদলে মেয়ে রেখে দিয়েছেন।

এ দিকে, শিশুর জন্মের পর থেকে এ নিয়ে দু’পক্ষের মধ্যে অভিযোগ ও পালটা অভিযোগ চলতে থাকলে তা মিটমাট করার জন্য গত ১১ নভেম্বর কালীবাড়িচর এলাকায় এক বিচারসভা বসে। এতে উপস্থিত সবাই জ্যোতিষের অনুমানকে কুসংস্কার বলে উড়িয়ে দেন। সবার সামনে সে দিন জয়শ্রীর আত্মীয়রা চাপে পড়ে তা মানলেও মন থেকে সমর্থন করতে পারেননি। আর বিচারসভা শেষ হতেই আশা কর্মী শেফালি দাসের উপর চড়াও হন। তাঁকে গালাগাল, এমনকি মারধরও করেন বলে অভিযোগ।

তবে মহিলার পরিবারের সদস্যরা এমন ভাবলেও নবজাতকের মা জয়শ্রী অবশ্য তাঁর মেয়ে সন্তান হয়েছে বলেই প্রথম থেকে মেনে নেন। তিনি শুধু বলেছেন, তাঁর সন্তানটি কেন দুর্বল হয়ে জন্মাল, সে ব্যাপারে আশা কর্মীকে জবাব দিতে হবে।

অন্যদিকে, কাজে গিয়ে এভাবে নিগ্রহের ঘটনায় তীব্র ক্ষোভ প্রকাশ করেছেন আশা কর্মীরা। শুক্রবার সকালে তারা শিলচর সিভিল হাসপাতালে জমায়ে হয়ে এ ঘটনার তদন্ত দাবি করেন। তাঁরা আশা কর্মী শেফালির উপর হামলাকারীদের বিরুদ্ধে দৃষ্টান্তমূলক শাস্তির দাবি জানান। সঙ্গে হুমকি ছুড়ে দেন, উপযুক্ত বিচার না পেলে তাঁরা কাজে যোগ দেবেন না। আশা কর্মীরা আরও বলেছেন, ২৪ ঘণ্টা কর্তব্য পালন করেও তাঁরা যথাযথ পারিশ্রমিক পাচ্ছেন না। উলটে তাঁদের অপবাদ সইতে হচ্ছে, মারধর করা হচ্ছে। আশা কর্মীরা বিষয়টি উর্ধতন কর্তৃপক্ষের নজরে নিয়েছেন।

November 16: An astrologer after examining all the stars and matching the palmistry informed the pregnant lady that she would give birth to a son. The prediction was enough for the family members of the pregnant lady to rejoice, for a son would be born in their family. However, when after delivery, it was found that the lady has given birth to a baby girl, the family members of the lady directly blamed the ASHA worker to have changed their newborn boy with a girl. They were confident that the lady has given birth to a boy because the astrologer has said them so.

When our digital nation is preparing itself to go for a bullet train ride very soon, its citizens are still in the grip of astrologers and fortune tellers. This particular incident did not happen in any interior village but in the heart of Silchar town. When the family members of the lady were not at all prepared to listen to any logical reply of the ASHA worker, she had no way but to resort to the elders of the locality. After hearing both the sides, the local elders rubbished the claims of the family of the lady as nothing but superstition.

Though they agreed to the opinion of the people of the locality, but after coming out of that meeting, they again started calling names and even physically abused the ASHA worker. Ultimately, the ASHA worker informed the matter to her fellow colleagues. On Friday, the ASHA workers assemble together at Satindra Mohan Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar and demanded that if the culprits are not arrested within 12 hours then they will stop working. They also threatened to launch a vigorous agitation, if their demand was not fulfilled.

The main incident occurred on 30 September when Jayashree Choudhury of Kalibari Char area gave birth to a girl at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. But the superstitious family members of the lady were so much influenced by the prediction of the astrologer that they were not ready to believe that a girl was born. They were confident that the words of astrologer cannot become false and so suspected the ASHA worker Shefali Das of their same locality to have changed their baby boy with another baby girl.

This led to allegation and counter allegation between them. To solve the matter a meeting was held in their locality on 11 November, wherein all dismissed the prediction of the astrologer to be superstition. However, though the family members initially accepted the decision of the meeting but later on they again started quarreling with the ASHA worker. It was alleged that they even physically abused Shefali Das. However, the mother of the new born baby was convinced that she has given birth to a girl.

It is in this backdrop that the ASHA workers have launched a protest demonstration today at Silchar Civil Hospital. They alleged that off and on they were mistreated by people. They said that they do their duty with full devotion but in return people misbehave with them. They demanded that if the culprits of Shefali das are not arrested within 12 hours then they will launch a vigorous movement.
