Battle for ballot comes to an end at Assam University,will normalcy return?

৯ অক্টোবর : সভাপতি পদে পরিবর্তন হল না। আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্র সংসদ নির্বাচনে সভাপতি পদে ফের রয়ে গেলেন মিলনপন্থী প্রার্থীই। তবে তাদের রীতিমত টেক্কা দিয়ে মিলন বিরোধী গোষ্ঠী বেশিরভাগ আসনে জয়ী হয়েছেন। একটি সূত্রে জানা গেছে, মিলন সমর্থকেরা মাত্র দুটি আসনে জয় ছিনিয়ে এনেছেন।

এ দিকে, সভাপতি পদে মিলন ঘনিষ্ঠ প্রার্থীর জয়ের ফলে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষের মাথাব্যাথা যে কমল না, তা পরিস্কার। কারণ গত কিছুদিন থেকে মিলন সমর্থিতরা তাদের দাবি নিয়ে উপাচার্যের কক্ষে তালা ঝুলিয়ে রেখেছেন। এজন্য উপাচার্যকে বাংলোয় বসেই কাজকর্ম পরিচালনা করতে হচ্ছে। কর্তৃপক্ষ অপেক্ষায় ছিলেন, জমানা বদল হলে পরিস্থিতি মোকাবিলা করা তাদের সুবিধা হবে। কিন্তু মিলনপন্থী প্রার্থী ফের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হওয়ায় কর্তৃপক্ষের সমস্যা যে কমেনি, তা আর বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না। উল্লেখযোগ্য হল, এনএসইউআই, এবিভিপি, আকসা কেউ-ই এ বার ছাত্র সংসদ নির্বাচনে প্যানেল দেয়নি।

ছাত্র সংসদের সভাপতি পদের নির্বাচনে মিলন ঘনিষ্ঠ অভিনন্দন মহন্ত ১৪৩৩ ভোট পেয়ে জয়ী হয়েছেন। তাঁর নিকটতম প্রার্থী প্রিয়নুজা বরা পেয়েছেন ৭২৯ ভোট। শামিম বড়ভূঁইয়া পেয়েছেন ৬৮৫ ভোট। ২৫ জন নোটায় ভোট দিয়েছেন।

জিএস পদে নিজের প্রার্থীর জয়কে ধরে রাখতে পারেনি মিলনপন্থীরা। এই পদে স্থানীয় দেবপ্রতিম সাহা মাত্র ৩ ভোটে জয়ী হয়েছেন। তিনি পেয়েছেন ১১৩৩ ভোট। তাঁর নিকটতম প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী রাজা কুমার পান ১১৩০ ভোট। জিএস পদে অন্য প্রার্থী বিজয় বর্মণ ৫৭৪ ভোট পেয়েছেন। নোটায় দিয়েছেন ২৭ জন। সহ সভাপতি পদে ১২১১ ভোট পেয়ে  জয়ী হয়েছেন  বিশ্বরঞ্জন চন্দ। ভিপি পদে মিলন ঘনিষ্ঠ তনবীর শরিফ রব্বানি ১০৪১ ভোট পেয়ে দ্বিতীয় স্থানে রয়েছেন। এছাড়া সহ সাধারণ সম্পাদক (ওপেন) পদে ১৫০৬ ভোট পেয়ে জয়ী হন জয়জিত ভট্টাচা। সহ সাধারণ সম্পাদক (মহিলা) পদে  মহরশ্রী বরো ১৫৪০ ভোট পেয়ে সেরা স্থানটি ছিনিয়ে এনেছেন। অন্য পদগুলোর মধ্যে সংস্কৃতি সম্পাদক হন কান্তেশ্বর বরগোঁহাই (১৭৭৪), ক্রীড়া সম্পাদক হয়েছেন সুরজ চন্দ (১০৯২) এবং ম্যাগাজিন সম্পাদক হন গৌরব সরকার (১২৮৭)।

এদিকে, মিলন শিবির জিএস পদের গণনা পুনরায় করার দাবি জানান। এ নিয়ে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এক উত্তাল পরিস্থিতির সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। কিন্তু কর্তৃপক্ষ তাতে রাজি হননি। পরে রাতেই বিজয়ীদের নাম ঘোষণা করে তাদের হাতে সার্টিফিকেট তুলে দেওয়া হয়। অন্যদিকে, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ছাত্র সংসদ নির্বাচনকে ঘিরে দিনভর কড়া নিরাপত্তা ছিল। সকাল থেকেই পুলিশ ও সিআরপিএফ বাহিনীকে নামানো হয়েছিল।

October 9: After the end of a tensed electoral battle, pro-Milon Das group was successful in bagging the post of the President in the Students’ Union election of Assam University, Silchar held on Tuesday. Sources revealed that they have registered their victory in two posts. The win for them was, however, not a cake walk. The other camp gave them a tough fight.

This victory will add to the woes of the University authorities and especially the Vice Chancellor whose office has been locked and sealed by the Students’ Union led by its President Milon Das since the last 12 days. Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, the Vice Chancellor of the University since then has been discharging his official duties from the guest house of the varsity. The university authorities were hopeful in the sense that if the anti-Milon camp wins the elction, then the new Students’ Union will break open the key and thereby enable the Vice Chancellor to function once again from his office after a brief stint of staying in ‘exile.’

It needs mention here that all the major students group like, NSUI, ABVP & ACKHSA refrained from declaring any party panel. Today’s election is in fact a contest between two power camps—those who are in favour of Milon (the existing President of Students’ Union representing the saffron brigade) and those who are anti-Milon. Ultimately, the pro-Milon camp won the battle of ballots.

The post of President was won by Abhinandan Mohanta who got 1433 votes. He defeated Priyanuja Bora who secured 729 votes. Mohanta registered his win by a margin of 704 votes. However, the Milon camp failed to win the post of General Secretary. After a tough battle, local candidate Deboprotim Saha bagged the GS post by a difference of only 3 votes. Debopom got 1133 votes whereas Raja Kumar Pan of the Milon camp got 1130 votes.

Meanwhile, a strong claim has been made for recounting of votes in the post of General Secretary. However, the Returning Officer and his team have declined their demand citing Lyngdoh Commission Report, where there is no provision for recounting. This has led to an atmosphere of tense in the campus. The Chairman of the Election Committee is Prof. G.Ram and Supriya Chakraborty is the Returning Officer. The million dollar question at this hour is will the Vice Chancellor be able to assert his influence and enter his office?
