২১ সেপ্টেম্বর : বাঙালিদের অস্তিত্ব বিপন্ন করে তুলতে একটি চক্র বিশেষভাবে কাজ করছে। তা সে নাগরিকপঞ্জি হোক বা ভাষা শহিদ স্টেশন। এখানকার মানুষ অনেক আশা করে বিজেপিকে ভোট দিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। প্রচুর বাঙালি ভোট দিয়েছেন বলেই সরকার করতে পেরেছে বিজেপি। সত্যিই, আমি মনে করি, আসামে বিজেপি সরকার গড়ার পেছনে বাঙালিদের একটা বড় অবদান রয়েছে।

শিলচর রেল স্টেশনের নাম পরিবর্তন করে ‘ভাষা শহিদ স্টেশন শিলচর’ করার ক্ষেত্রে সেই চক্রটাই কাজ করছে। এই নাম পরিবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে কেন্দ্র সরকার নো অবজেকশন জানিয়ে রাজ্য সরকারকে গেজেট নোটিফিকেশন জারি করার কথা বলেছিল। আমরা এজন্য বার বার গিয়েছি। কিন্তু এখন পর্যন্ত কোনও পদক্ষেপই গ্রহণ করা হয়নি। বিষয়টা পুরোপুরি উদ্দেশ্যপ্রণোদিত, কারণ এ সংক্রান্ত ফাইল মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর কাছে পাঠানোর পরও তা তিনি ফেলে রেখেছেন।

বাঙালির অস্তিত্ব বিপন্ন তো বটেই। কবিগুরুর জন্মদিন পালন করতে দেওয়া হচ্ছে না, পুজোর বন্ধ কেটে ফেলা হচ্ছে, আর এ বার ভাষা শহিদ স্টেশন নামকরণের ফাইলটি বন্ধ করে রাখা হয়েছে। এসব আমাদের জন্য এক কালো অধ্যায়।

তবে এখন অবশ্য বরাকের বা আসামের বাঙালিদের কিছুটা চোখ ফুটেছে। কিন্তু এরপরও অনেকেরই ঘুম ভাঙছে না। আমি মনে করি, আজকের দিনে সবাইকে প্রকাশ্যে এসে এর প্রতিবাদ করা উচিত। একেক জন একেকটি দল করতে পারেন, কেউ বিজেপি করেন, কেউ কংগ্রেসকে সমর্থন করেন। তবে এখন এই সময়ে সবার প্রকাশ্যে এসে কথা বলা দরকার। না হলে ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মকে অন্ধকারে ঠেলে দেব আমরা।

September 21: The existence of the Bengalis is in stake due to the role played a particular group. This is true in respect of NRC and also as regards renaming of Silchar Railway Station as ‘‘Bhasha Sahid Station, Silchar.” People of this valley voted for the BJP with great hopes and aspirations. BJP was successful in forming the government because a large number of Bengalis pressed the button of EVM in favour of them. Really, what I feel is that BJP was able to form the government in Assam largely due to the whole hearted support of the Bengalis.

That particular group is also responsible when it comes to renaming Silchar Railway Station as ‘‘Bhasha Sahid Station, Silchar.” On 7 November 2016, Government of India gave no objection for changing the name of Silchar Railway Station as ‘Bhasha Sahid Station, Silchar. In that letter issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs of Government of India, the state government of Assam was requested to issue the required Gazette Notification for the spelling of new name in Devnagri (Hindi), Roman (English) and Regional Language (Bengali). We have met the Chief Minister several times, but till now the government has not adopted any positive step. It’s my belief that the matter is kept in abeyance intentionally by the Chief Minister for reasons best known to him.

It is a fact that the existence of the Bengalis is at stake. We are not allowed to celebrate the birthday of Poet Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Puja holidays are curtailed and now, the file of renaming Silchar Railway Station has been kept in cold storage. These are all black chapters in our long history of suppression & oppression.

However, it’s a somewhat good sign that at present the Bengalis of Barak Valley and Assam have learnt to raise their voice against the injustice meted out towards them. What I feel is that, at present the Bengalis need to wake up from their slumber and raise voice against such injustice. We may belong to different parties, some may be supporters of BJP, some of Congress, but at this point of time, all need to come out and speak in the same tune. If we do not wake up, then we will be leaving behind us a gloomy future for our posterity.
